Strange Procedures – Investigations into Emergent Urbanism and Architectural Form

Advanced Architecture Masters Elective
RMIT, Melbourne 2009

This elective is interested in examining a wide of emergent relational phenomena through the use of various computational techniques to model aspects of these relationships and examine how they can lead to certain patterns within cities.

This elective aims to provide students with a general background in rule-based design strategies. The outputs (procedural models) will be developed through basic programming concepts, parametric design strategies and rapid-prototyping technologies.

This elective suits students with good CAD skills. Scripting experience is welcome but NOT required. An interest in the structural relationships between things is important, as well as some degree of patience, precision and clarity of thought. Students will learn the basics of Rhino scripting, some theory of emergent systems and how to create very beautiful and elaborate abstract drawings. We will be using the 3D modeling environment Rhino and will develop a series of speculative projects through the use of various scripting techniques.

Objectives

This elective suits students with good CAD skills. Scripting experience is welcome but NOT required. An interest in the structural relationships between things is important, as well as some degree of patience, precision and clarity of thought.

Students will learn the basics of Rhino scripting, some theory of emergent systems, a new perspective on cities, and how to create very beautiful and elaborate abstract drawings.

We will be using the experimental ‘graphCA’ plugin for Rhino, developed at RMIT, and explore the above mentioned phenomena through the use of various scripting techniques to give form to these relationships.
